Rathkenny took a major step towards playing Senior Championship football in 2016 with this five point victory over St Patricks Stamullen in Brews Hill last Friday evening September 4th.

Both teams had two early scores on the board as the clock reached four minutes of play. Rathkennys points coming from the boot of Thomas Martin. Martin struck for a goal soon after when good build up play on the left wing gave Caolach Halligan possession thirty meters from goal. He burst through the defence before passing to Martin on the edge of the square. Martin coolly finished to the net and Rathkenny were never headed again in the match. Rathkenny hit five remaining first half scores, two impressive efforts from Jack Gore from the right touchline and three from star man Caolach Halligan. Rathkenny ended the half leading 1-07 to 0-05 after playing with wind advantage.

Rathkenny were much the better starters to the second half with the opening four points through Thomas Martin (2), Brian Meade and Caolach Halligan. The Meade effort typified Rathkenny on the night as the St Pats keeper was deemed to have taken too long to take a kick out and from the resultant throw up, Meade gained possession, burst through the St Pats rear-guard and sent over. Thomas Martin sent over again on 41 minutes to bring Rathkennys tally to 1-12. Caolach Halligan sent over two great frees against the breeze in a two minute spell and Rathkenny were ten points clear entering the last eight minutes. Thomas McGuinness sent over Rathkennys last score with five minutes remaining. St Pats managed to get two late goals which if scored five minutes earlier may have made it an interesting finale.

St Pats will now meet Walterstown next Saturday evening and need to win to have any chance of remaining Senior next year.
