Rathkenny retained their senior status for another year as they eventually overcame Oldcastle in sunny Kilmainhamwood last Saturday evening, September 13th.
Rathkenny 0-12
Oldcastle 0-05
Both team started nervously as chances went a begging. There were a number of wides before Oldcastle popped over the opening score on ten minutes through Paddy Rahill. Rathkenny finally got on level terms when Brian Lenehan kicked over a 45 on thirteen minutes. Donal Curtis put the men in Red and Black in front on the quarter hour mark. Rathkenny continued to dominate the possession stakes but poor decision making and resolute defending meant wasted opportunities. Oldcastle eventually levelled matters on 20 minutes from a Paddy Rahill free kick. Rathkenny finally got back on the scoreboard courtesy of a close range Donal Curtis free and a fine effort from Brian Lenehan. This left Rathkenny two to the good at the break.
Oldcastle reduced the arrears straight from the throw in as Rahill sent over his third point of the day. However Rathkenny sent over the next four scores via Ivan Lenehan, Caolach Halligan, Donal Curtis and Brian Meade. This left five between the sides. Paddy Gilsenan sent over Oldcastle's fourth point on forty minutes. Rathkenny held firm and looked the team that were hungrier in the final quarter. Unanswered scores from John Donegan, Brian Meade, substitute Thomas Martin and Brain Meade put eight between the sides entering the final ten minutes. Oldcastle's Paddy Rahill sent over the final score of the game on 55 minutes, leaving Rathkenny retaining senior status and Oldcastle playing Intermediate football in 2015.
Rathkenny GFC would like to wish Donal Curtis a happy retirement and thank him for his wonderful years of service to both club and county.
