Syddan secure top spot
August 13, 2003
Syddan secured their place at the top of IFC Group A with a convincing 20-point win over Rathkenny in Drumconrath.
Syddan 3-17
Rathkenny 0-06
The win puts Syddan through as group leaders where they will face either St. Colmcille's or Nobber in the quarterfinal depending on the outcome of the Nobber appeal.
The game against Rathkenny was almost embarrassing for the Rathkenny following towards the end of the match. Rathkenny were short county man Donal Curtis and Syddan were missing full back Thomas Dillon. Dillon's place was filled by brother Stephen who gave a man of the match performance after a long absence.
Rathkenny started strong and it looked as though it would be a close encounter for the first 15 minutes. But the Syddan forwards came into their own in the second quarter with some great work from Eamon McGuire and Philip Duff and some brilliant scores from Trevor Gilsenan. The game was practical ally over at half time but Duff put the final nail in the coffin half way through the second half when he completed a hat trick of goals.
