There were disgraceful scenes during the Ballinlough-Navan O'Mahony's SFC match at Kells on Sunday evening, June 21st as a mass brawl resulted in five players being dismissed. The majority of the match had passed without incident when, with 10 minutes remaining and Ballinlough leading by 2-10 to 2-7, a challenge by O'Mahony's goalkeeper Keith Lane led to a melee involving around a dozen players. Lane and teammate Cathal O Bric were sent to the line, along with opponents Seamus Byrne, Philip O'Brien and Raymond Lydon. Ballinlough youngster Ronan McGuinness was taken to hospital with a suspected broken jaw. The rest of the match, which Ballinlough won by 2-13 to 2-8, was played out with no further trouble. The victory gives the club three points out of a possible six in Division B, and puts them in with a chance of a quarter-final place. O'Mahony's, on the other hand, have just one win from their three matches, and will probably need victory over championship fancies Dunderry in the last round of games to avoid a dreaded relegation play-off.
