IFC: Michaels pick up their first points of the campaign

St. Michaels put their recent bad results behind them when they travelled the short distance to Moynalty on Saturday evening to pick up their first points of the campaign with a hard earned 5 point victory over Kilmainham. Kilmainham will count the no 13 jersey unlucky as it was the one worn by star corner forward Ronan "Blondie" Lynch who rattled over 8 points, seven of them from placed balls.
It was nip and tuck in the opening 20 minutes with St. Michaels holding a slim 2 point lead. Ronan Lynch and Peter O'Connell opened the winners account but Kilmainham replied with 2 points to level matters. O'Connell pushed his side in front again on 13 minutes and seconds later J.B. O'Reilly won the resultant kick-out and fed O'Connell who put two between the sides. A pointed free from Ronan Lynch consolidated that lead and when J.B. O'Reilly again rose highest and collected the kick-out in the middle of the field he decided he'd go it alone this time and he put his side 0-6 to 0-2 in front. Kilmainham then took control and in a ten minute spell they fired over 4 points without reply to level the match. A pin point pass from Peter O'Connell to David Lynch resulted in St. Michaels edging back into the lead and two more converted frees from "Blondie" gave his side a 0-9 to 0-6 interval lead.
St. Michaels always seem to make life difficult for themselves, this match was no different, Sam Briody received his marching orders in the opening minute of the second half but in fairness to his 14 team-mates they knuckled down to the task on hand to secure the victory. Kilmainham sent over the free created by Briody's sending off but it was soon cancelled out by another Lynch free. Kilmainham tagged on two more points but St. Michaels cancelled them out almost immediately. St. Michaels brought on Jamie Farrelly on 40 minutes and he was only on the pitch 2 minutes when he got on the end of a high ball to send it to the back of the net for the games only goal. Kilmainham had their own misfortune soon afterwards as they lost the influential Trevor Lynch to a black card but they kept plugging away and sent over 4 points without reply in a 6 minute spell to leave just two points between the sides 1-12 to 0-13 with 8 minutes remaining on the clock, but they couldn't keep the momentum flowing and St. Michaels came back into the game with Ronan Lynch 0-2 and J.B. O'Reilly 0-1 completing the scoring for the winners. Jamie Reilly, Mark Stafford, Robert Briody, Paddy Clarke, Felim O'Reilly and Ronan Cassidy were others who showed up well for St. Michaels.
