IFC: Syddan brush Drumbaragh aside
May 25, 2014
Syddan's Daire Rowe
SYDDAN 3-16
DRUMBARAGH 1-6
IT was mostly 'one direction' throughout the second half as 14-man Syddan brushed aside the challenge of Drumbaragh to maintain their unbeaten sequence in the IFC at Meath Hill.
A controversial start to that second period, resulting in a straight red card for midfielder Stephen Dillon before the ball was thrown in seemed to strengthen Syddan's resolve as they went on to win in impressive style.
Dillon was involved in an altercation with a Drumbaragh player on the stroke of half-time but referee Joey Curley waited until the restart before taking action.
Drumbaragh struck the opening score of the second half but Syddan replied almost immediately with two quick-fire points from Daire Rowe to increase their 2-4 to 0-2 interval advantage and they were never seriously troubled thereafter.
The game was 14 minutes old before Luke Halpenny eventually broke the deadlock with the opening point of the game, and it took Drumbaragh all of 21 minutes to get off the mark, midfielder John Smyth converting a free.
With five minutes of the half remaining Syddan led 0-3 to 0-1 but then Daire Rowe cut in from the left wing and spotted Paddy Farrelly lurking at the far post and the full forward slapped the ball to the net from close range.
Farrelly then added a point and it got even better for Syddan after that as a long range effort from Cormac Rowe went all the way to the net.
A second goal from Farrelly on 40 minutes left it 3-8 to 0-5 and that effectively ended Drumbaragh's challenge.
Daire Rowe contributed six second half points while Farrelly eventually took his tally to 2-3.
Centre back William Carry scored a consolation goal for Drumbaragh three minutes from the finish and they also finished with 14 after their corner back was shown a second yellow card near the end.
