IFC: Ultans victory in vain
September 02, 2013
Kevin Galligan St Ultans
St. Ultans 0-9
Syddan 0-8
St. Ultans secured their third win on the trot. Sadly, results elsewhere meant the gallant effort to make the knockout stages of the championship came up just short. Still, they will take heart from this latest victory and will look forward to next season with renewed optimism.
Syddan made the better start and were two points ahead after five minutes. Shane Rennicks opened the scoring for the eventual winners. A Kevin Galligan free and another point from Rennicks had the match all square on fifteen minutes. Kevin Galligan pointed after a move started at the other end of the field by Jason Bennett. Three unanswered points from Syddan saw them lead at half time on a 0-6 to 0-4 scoreline.
However, that was to be their last score. Gearoid Rennicks started the winners' comeback with a point. Stephen Quirke added another. Further points from Galligan and Quirke had the sides level with ten minutes left before Ciaran Rogers scored the winning point with five minutes left on the clock. Syddan pressed hard for the equaliser, but Pat Duffy's men defended tenaciously to hold out for a narrow, but fully-deserved victory.
Others to shine for the Ultans were Ciaran Timmons, Daryl McLaughlin, Ronan Galligan, and subs Mark Allen and Barry Brady.
