BFL1: Dunshaughlin and O'Mahonys draw

May 21, 2013

Dunshaughlin's Denis Kealy
Dunshaughlin 0-09
Navan O'Mahonys 0-09

In a change of venue for this Div 1 B League encounter both Dunshaughlin and Navan O'Mahonys made the familiar trip up to Skryne for this anticipated Monday night fixture.

It was the brews hill outfit who drew first blood registering the first score of the night after 4 minutes of play before Dunshaughlins Stephen Ward got the black and amber on the scoreboard 6 minutes later. From this point on it was all O'Mahonys with them enjoying long periods of possession and them registering 4 unanswered points to leave them leading by 4 points with 2 minutes to go in the half.

Thankfully for Dunshaughlin their full back line were once again performing miracles and keeping them in the tie with Mr consistent JJ Mc Donnell once again giving an exhibition on full back play. Niall mini Murphy and his midfield partner Niall Kelly was now starting to have an influence on things around the middle and it was the Dublin based stockbroker Kelly who caught a great ball and went on a powerful run before offloading to centre forward Paddy McHale who dispatched a score on the run in the 29th minute to leave just 3 points in the game as the half time whistle came.

The second half resumed with Dunshaughlins Denis Kealy making his first appearance for the year at centre back and things were now starting to look up with 3 unanswered scores with the gifted Stephen Ward adding another, Maynooth student Niall Murphy getting his first score of the night and Danny Geraghty scoring the point of the game with fantastic score wide on the right on the run.

Two converted frees for the men from Brews hill put them back in front by 1 but it was Niall sweets Kelly who levelled things on the 16th minute to now leave an exciting last 14 minutes to the game. From this point on both teams enjoyed good possession and will rue some missed chances but this was not the case for sharp shooter James Rattigan who kept his composure to score 2 fine points to leave a grandstand last 3 minutes of the game.

A Navan O'Mahonys point in injury time looked to have won the game for them but corner forward David McCormack rounded off a fine couple of days for him personally with a well worked score with practically the last kick of the game. Both sides will fell they should have won this game but it will be Dunshaughlin who will take a lot of heart from this game as they never gave up and dug deep to gain a valuable point.

USA bound Cillian Dennehy will be happy with his performance as will corner back Sean Joyce who was inspiration at times along with JJ McDonnell. Niall Murphy put in a great shift in the engine room and Denis Kealy looked as though he never left with some vital interceptions.

Number 7 seemed to bring out the best in Mark Devaney and he gave a performance similar to millennium man Martin o'Connell but my award for man of the match on the night went to former Leinster footballer of the year Niall Kelly who was at the heart of all things good for Dunshaughlin and still processed the skill trickery and knowhow to torment any defence in Meath Football.
