U14: Brave St Michaels effort just fall short.

May 16, 2013

Corey McGivern gains possession against Longwood in the U14 Division 4 semi final at Grangegodden.
The young lads from St. Michaels put in a brave effort in last evenings U-14 semi-final in Grangegoddan, Kells and had they availed of their numerous chances in front of goal they would have been looking forward to a place in the final this morning.

Longwood 3-7
St Michaels 2-7

Caolan McConnell who played a roving roll all over the pitch cancelled out Longwood's opening point when his shot sailed over the black spot on 5 minutes and he was on hand 3 minutes later to convert a penalty after a foot block inside the square. Longwood then enjoyed a 20 minute spell of dominance registering 2-3 on the scoreboard, their goals coming in the 23rd and 30th minutes. St. Michaels only reply in that period was a single point from Ben Reilly to leave his side trailing 1-2 to 2-4 at the interval.

In a much more exciting and competitive second half, Patrick Tobin opened the scoring with a point straight from the throw-in, this was cancelled out a minute later with Longwood's next attack. St. Michaels then took control of the match, two points from Caolan McConnell and a brilliantly taken goal from Cian Sheridan put the sides on level terms midway through the half, Longwood were awarded a penalty but blasted it wide of the post, Caolan McConnell put St. Michaels into the lead for the first time with a pointed free, Longwood replied almost immediately to level the match for the third time, they regained the lead a minute later but Caolan again put his side on level terms with 5 minutes on the clock. Disaster then struck as both teams were reduced to 12 players as Caolan and his marker both received their second yellow cards followed by a red, however it was Longwood who adapted better to their shortfall and they found the back of the net with two minutes remaining to secure a place in the final on a 3-7 to 2-7 scoreline.

Caolan McConnell, Patrick Tobin, Harry Dunne, Scott Doyle, Ben Reilly, Mark O'Brien, Jason O'Donnell and Corey McGivern gave it their best throughout for St. Michaels.
