May 15, 2012

Cortown's Declan Coyne
Cortown 4-12
St Ultans 1-4

Cortown's second team got the better of their St Ultan's counterparts in this B league Division 3 game played in Cortown on Monday night.

Cortown were first on the scoreboard with points from John Casserly and Tommy Smith. A Brian Faulkner goal followed by points from Alex Bulter, Declan Clarke and two more from Smith had Cortown 1-6 to no score ahead after 20 minutes of play. St Ultan's responded with two Conor Smith frees and against the run of play St Ultan's full forward Ger Brennen found the net. Declan Coyne was outstanding at midfield and gave an exhibition of high fielding and Cortown responded with two more points from Con Cleary and Brian Faulkner to leave the scores at half time Cortown 1-8 St Ultans 1-2.

St Ultan's got the first score of the second half but Cortown rallied and after some great team play the ball was worked forward for Conor Mulroe to finish to the net. St Ultans made some positional changes but could not match Cortown's hunger and work rate. Points from Martin Henry and Declan Clarke, and a goal by veteran Con Cleary had Cortown cruising. Tommy Smith added two further points for Cortown between another Conor Smyth free for the Ultan's that proved to be their last. Another fine team move resulted in John Casserly finding the net in the 56th minute. St Ultans went looking for goals but were shut out by a full back line led by Mervyn O'Brien and an excellent save from Cortown's goalkeeper James Costello from Conor Smyth with the last kick of the game put the finishing touch on what was a great display of team football by Cortown against their parish neighbours.
