May 14, 2012
Donaghmore Ashbourne 4-11
Drumbarragh Emmets 0-07
Donaghmore Ashbourne's 4th team opened their Junior D championship campaign with a comfortable win over Drumbarragh Emmets in Bective on Sunday. Despite a cross field wind this was a very entertaining game with both sides willing to play open football.
Donaghmore Ashbourne started the brightest and took an early lead with a brace of points from David Carey on 3 and 6 minutes. With the Donaghmore Ashbourne defence working hard to keep the North Meath side at bay two points from Sean Breslin on 8 and 9 minutes at the other end extended the lead to 4 points. Donaghmore Ashbourne's first goal came on 14 minutes when a high ball deceived the Drumbarragh keeper and Michael Doherty was first to react to flick the ball to an open net from close range. Although Drumbarragh missed a couple of chances at the other end they did register points on 20 and 27 minutes, the latter coming from a free. David Carey got the final score of the half when he broke through the Drumbarragh defence with a good solo run and fired low towards goal. Although the first attempt was saved the rebound fell kindly for Carey and he made no mistake with the second attempt to leave the interval score of 2-04 to 0-02.
As expected the Drumbarragh lads were going to come out strong in the second half and registered the first score of this period with a free on 31 minutes. This was followed with second point from play on 35 minutes to leave 6 between the teams.
Tom Draper got his first of the afternoon when he finished off a good team score with a point from 25 meters on 38 minutes. The sides traded scores with Drumbarragh pointing from a free on 40 minutes with Carey replying a minute later from 25 meters out.
Substitute Tom O'Connor raised the white flag for Donaghmore Ashbourne on 43 minutes with a point from 20 meters out and Doherty extended the lead at the end of the 3rd quarter with a fisted point from close range after a good solo run.
Although Drumbarragh registered a point from a free on 46 minutes it was Donaghmore Ashbourne who finished the strongest in the final quarter. Sean Kent finished off a good team score when he fisted a ball to the net after some good inter passing play on 48 minutes. A high ball into the goal area saw a tussle between Doherty and the Drumbarragh keeper with the ball falling kindly for the corner forward who managed to toe poke it into the net on 50 minutes. Sean Breslin pointed on 51 minutes and Bruton pointed on 53 minutes while Drumbarragh's final score came on 56 minutes.A well taken free from Tom Draper from an acute angle on 58 minutes was Donaghmore Ashbourne's final score.
Overall it was good team performance with notable contributions from Michael Mc Cabe and Andrew Brady in defence and David Carey showing his skill upfront.
