AFL1: Pat's impressive against Skryne

May 13, 2012

Daithi Whyte St Patrick's
St.Patrick's 2-11
Skyrne 1-02

St. Patrick's had a very impressive win against Skryne in a windswept Stamullen on Sunday. A very strong wind blew across the pitch which slightly benefitted St.Pat's in the first half and they were quickest out of the traps when Daithi Whyte opened the scoring after a great catch on 4 minutes.

It was the 14th minutes before the next score when Niall Mooney scored a penalty off the post after Donal Landy had been hauled down with the goal at his mercy. With scores hard to come by Niall Mooney got the next point after robbing the ball and Daithi Whyte then split the posts. Skryne's first score of the half came in injury time when Paddy O'Rourke scored a free to leave St.Patrick's 1-03 to 0-01 infront at halftime.

Cormac Sullivan came on as a halftime sub and Pat's utilised him fully as a full-forward target man. Niall Whearty drove the ball just over the bar from close-range and quicky followed this up with a fisted point after a really good passing move. Niall Mooney swung over a fine left-footed effort and then he was on hand to tap the ball into the open goal after another fantastic passing move. Niall Whearty then had another sight of goal but his shot hit the crossbar and then ricocheted off the post and over the bar for another point.

Skryne then managed to stem the tide somewhat when the ball dropped to Paddy O'Rourke and he managed to finish the ball low to the back of the net with his left foot. Pat's answered back when Niall Whearty scored a nice point from the left wing before sub Shane Landy fisted over a great point from the tightest of angles after picking the ball up on the left wing. Barry Campbell then converted a 20 yard free on 60 minutes before Paddy O'Rourke rounded of Skryne's scoring with a booming, wind-assited point from the 65 metre line as Pat's ran out comfortable winners on a scoreline of St.Patrick's 2-11 Skryne 1-02.

Best for the Pat's were Niall Whearty, Niall Mooney and Daithi Whyte.
