AFL2: Colmcille's better Ballinlough

May 13, 2012

St Colmcille's Damien Beakey
St Colmcille's 1-9
Ballinlough 1-6

St Colmcilles travelled to Ballinlough to try to pick up just their second win of the League so far. They won their last match against Walterstown and drew with Rathkenny in their first game.

There was a very strong wind and the Cilles had the advantage of this in the first half. Ballinlough opened the scoring  with a point, to be followed up the following minute with the Cilles first score, a goal courtesy of Anthony O'Grady. The Ciles then enjoyed their most dominant spell for the next 10 minutes with Damien O'Brien adding a point to their tally through a free, Jack Reynolds one more from a free and O'Brien another one through a free to leave them leading 1-4 to 0-1 ahead with 20 minutes gone. However, the Cilles did not score again for the remainer of the half  and did not take full advantage of the strong wind they had in their favour and had 4 wides before the close of the half. Ballinlough added one more to leave the sides 1-4 to 0-2 at the break.

However, the home side were not going to allow the Cilles to have it all their own way in the second half and opened the second half with 3 unanswered points, one from play and two from frees. Jack Reynolds added another for the Cilles through a free to leave the away side a goal ahead 5 minutes into the second half. Ballinlough fought hard and this paid off for them when a goal was converted in the sixth minute to leave the sides all square. This is how is would remain for the majority of the second half with both sides having a number of wides. Ben Brennan, who had been playing well in midfield for the Cilles had to go off due to injury after 20 minutes and was replaced by John McKenna. Ballinlough then scored a point and went 1 ahead with 10 minutes to go. The Cilles were winning plenty of ball in midfield but were unable to convert their posession into scores. However, with 1 minute to go Jack Reynolds evened the score with 1-6 each. While Ballinlough will regret the wides they had in this closing period the Cilles took their chances through some excellent points from Damien Beakey who put the Cilles 1 ahead and Cathal Hilliard and John McKenna added one each to leave the final score 1-9 to 1-6.
