AFL4: Drumconrath see off Curraha

May 13, 2012

Drumconrath's Stephan Crosby
Drumconrath 1-14
Curraha 0-15

In what was a good game of football from 2 committed teams and while the strong breeze blew straight down the pitch into the club house end it did not influence the game too much as both sides hit some great scores both with it and against it.

Drumconrath played with the breeze in the 1st half and where slow to settle, while Leighton Irwin did point an early free Curraha on their first three attacks pointed trice as Neil Shorthall and David Dunne showed good accuracy. Another Irwin free reeled the home side in somewhat and when Drumconrath won a 45 Sean Kane strode forward to attempt to level the game but his effort was wayward and Irwin did well to keep the ball in play and as he cut in on goal was hauled down and the referee had no hesitation in awarding a penalty. Irwin stroked it home for Drums to take the lead, something they held onto till the end.

Irwin pointed another free as Danny Battersby notched the first point from play of the game for Curraha. Further frees from Dunne and Shorthall brought Curraha's tally to 0-6 while Alan Byrne and 2 Stephan Crosby points all from play had the Drums 1-6 to 0-6 ahead at the break.

Curraha wind assisted narrowed to gap to a point within 3 minutes and it looked bad for the visitors but Irwin after good work by Crosby and Chris Tighe boomed over a fine score. Tighe from play and an Irwin free stretched the lead to four and it stayed like that till the end with 3 to 4 points in the game until injury time when two late Curraha points narrowed the gap to 2.

Shorthall for Currha hit some great points while Sean McMahon, Alan Byrne, Gavin Finnegan (2) and Crosby after a good lay off from Daniel Myles getting the Drumconrath replies as Drums put in a fine display to claim back top spot in the Table with Oran Finnegan, Jamie Myles, Peter Tighe, Stephan Crosby, Sean McMahon, Gavin Finnegan all putting in good shifts all they managed 8 points in good 2nd half display.
