St Ultans went a long way into preserving their Intermediate status with a four point win over Cortown in Kilmainham on Saturday night.

Cortown will now have to play St Michael's to find out who will be playing in the Junior Championship next year. St Ultans started the match in the best possible way with a point from Cian Rennicks after 4 minutes played. Rennicks then added another point from play for a fast starting Ultans outfit. Ciaran Rogers then got in on the scoring after good work by Shane Rennicks. Cortown opened their account with a point from play. Cian Rennicks then added another Ultans point. Full Forward Derek O Brien scored from play with a sweet effort with his left boot. The crucial score of the first half was a goal from Midfielder Gearoid Rennicks. Daryl Mc Loughlin floated in a defence splitting pass and Rennicks finished it to the net after a half block. This left the score Ultans 1-5 to a point. Ultans were well on top all over the field. Spear headed by Jason Bennett and Kieran lynch at the back and Paul Murray at Midfield the foundations for this victory were laid. Ultans finished the scoring before Half Time with a points by Shane Rennicks, Daryl Mc Loughlin and Gearoid Rennicks. The half time score was St Ultans 1-8 Cortown 0-2.

The second half was different to the first half in that it was a tense and hard hitting affair. There was an absence of quality that was there in the 1st. Cortown started the second half the brightest and were awarded a penalty in the early stages of the second half that was subsequently missed. A big let off for the Ultans. They failed to push on and were responsible for bad decision making at times. The major incident in the second half was the awarding of two red cards to Cortown players. To Cortown's credit they battled on and reduced the defecit. A Daryl Mc Loughlin free and a Cian Rennicks point from play finished the scoring. Credit must be given to Goalkeeper Robert Daly who made a great save from Gary Coyne in the closing stages of the game.

Best for St Ultans were Rob Duffy, Ciaran Timmons, Kieran Lynch, Jason Bennett, Tomas Coyne and Cian Rennicks.
