SFC: Rathkenny secure quarter final place
July 19, 2010
Rathkenny's Richie Timmons
Rathkenny defeated Dunshaughlin by a single point in this Group A Senior Football Championship match played in windy Pairc Tailteann last Sunday afternoon July 18th.
Rathkenny 1-07
Dunshaughlin 1-06
The men from Dunshaughlin playing against the wind were quickest out of the blocks to register the first two scores of the game. Rathkenny finally got their first score from Meath selector Donal Curtis on fifteen minutes, followed by the equaliser from the boot of Richie Timmons.
Both sides found it hard to cope with the greasy underfoot conditions and were also guilty of some bad wides. Dunshaughlin edged back in front with five minutes of the half remaining before Rathkenny put on a scoring spurt of 1-03 in four minutes to lead 1-05 to 0-03 at the break.
A sideline ball was kicked into the danger area by John Donegan and the ball eventually found its way to Richie Timmons who buried it to the net. Two minutes later Brian Lenehan converted a 45, followed by a Timmons free sixty seconds later. Lenehan completed the first half scoring with a fine effort.
Rathkenny extended the lead seven minutes after the break with the reliable Donal Curtis adding a point. Dunshaughlin popped over the next three scores to leave it 1-06 to 0-06 with five minutes remaining. Brian Meade popped over what was to be Rathkennys final score, before Dunshaughlin found the net within a minute to leave the minimum between the teams. Both teams had chances to add to their total, but Rathkenny held on for the win.
