Moynalvey picked up their fifth win from as many outings with a 4-16 to 2-12 win over visitors Moynalty in this PMC Physiotherapy Div. 9 round 4 back game played at Kilmore Park Moynalvey on Thursday evening May 9th.

The win sees Moynalvey remain unbeaten and move two points clear of the pack in the Div. 9 league table with this ten point win.

In what was a competitive game with little separating the sides throughout until perhaps the experience off Moynalvey’s bench saw them pull away in the final quarter.

The visitors opened the scoring in the first minute with a point from Kian Lynch, Moynalvey’s opening score coming a minute later from Craig Gilsenan.

Then two players at the opposite ends of their playing careers combined with a searing run from seventeen year old Barry Walsh setting up veteran James O’Neill to palm to the net for the first of the game’s six goals. 

The two Walsh brothers Vinny and Barry sent over points to leave it 1-3 to 0-1 to the home side with eight minutes gone.

Then Moynalty hit Moynalvey for a quick fire 2-2, to make the score 2-3 to 1-3 mid way through the opening half.

Moynalvey responded with a pair of points from Craig Gilsenan and James O’Neill, which were followed up by a trio of Moynalty points, leaving four points between the sides with two minutes of the half remaining, 2-7 to 1-6.

Three Moynalvey points from Vinny Walsh, Luke O’Halloran and Anthony Brien closed the gap to the minimum by the time referee Stephen Cregan blew his half time whistle, leaving the score 2-7 to 1-9 at half time.

A quick start to the second half saw Moynalvey kick three points in the first five minutes; points for Vinny Walsh, former Kerry minor James O’Neill rolling back the years with his second of the evening and a rare point for substitute William Mahady immediately after his introduction, leaving it 1-12 to 2-7.

Moynalty almost had their third goal of the evening but for a reflex save from Paul Corcoran, but they did follow up with a brace of points to draw matters level for a third time with six minutes of the half gone, 1-12 to 2-9.

A bursting run from the excellent Craig Gilsenan saw him pop the ball to Alan Donnelly who split the uprights, however Moynalty levelled matters again four minutes later, 1-13 to 2-10.

Then came Moynalvey’s third goal from Craig Gilsenan at the three quarter hour mark, the one that ignited the home side’s final quarter dominance, in which they outscored their opponents 3-3 to 0-2. 

Ninety seconds after Gilsenan’s goal, Barry Walsh who had proven a thorn in the Moynalty defence all evening had helped himself to 1-1, extending Moynalvey’s advantage to seven points. But for a brilliant goal line clearance from David Durkan in between Walsh’s two scores Moynalty would have had a third goal. 

A Craig Gilsenan point followed by a Vinny Walsh goal who rounded the keeper to tap home gave Moynalvey a commanding 4-15 to 2-10 lead with just five minutes remaining.

The scoring was rounded off with a pair of Moynalty points and a fourth for the impressive Barry Walsh, leaving Caoimhin King’s side ten point winners on a 4-16 to 2-12 score line.

In an open high scoring game which yielded six goals, but for Moynalvey’s wastefulness in fronts of the posts in the first half and a couple of brilliant Paul Corcoran saves and a goal line clearance from David Durkan in the second half there would have been plenty more green flags.

Best for the winners were Paul Corcoran, David Durkan, Craig Gilsenan, Vinny Walsh, William Harnan, James O’Neill, Barry Walsh and Luke O’Halloran who covered every blade of grass on the pitch. 

Next up for Moynalvey is a trip to play second placed Slane on Tuesday night in round 6.
