Paddy McDermott Carnaross

Drumbaragh 3-06 Carnaross 0-13

Carnaross travelled to near neighbours Drumbaragh on a glorious Saturday evening to lock horns in this rescheduled J.M.B. Sportsfield Services Round 3 fixture. It was a typical full-blooded derby, with a large crowd in attendance, on a well-presented Drumbaragh surface.

Drumbaragh were quickest out of the blocks registering 3 points to Carnaross' sole score in the first 15 minutes. Things began to click for the Ross as they carried the ball with purpose out of defence ending up with McDermott clipping over two fine scores from play to draw the teams level. Drumbaragh were living off scraps during this period of dominance but they crucially countered with great effect to score their first major of the contest. Conor Kenny saved the initial shot but the rebound ended up in the back of the net. This was a sign of things to come as the Hoops dominated proceedings but Drumbaragh's clinical finishing proved crucial over the course of the hour. In response to the goal, maruading wing back, Cormac Yore delivered a long, dangerous ball into the Drums square which evaded everyone to bounce over the bar, bringing back memories of PJ Gillic's effort in 1991 for Meath against Dublin. Shane O'Reilly continued with his rich vein of scoring before McDermott drew the teams level for the second time. Before the half, Drumbaragh were reduced to 14, when their centre back was black carded.

Carnaross began the second half by utilising the extra man, when John Reilly tore down the wing laying it off to the Yore brothers, with Oisín scoring a beauty. Drumbaragh responded instantly with their second goal of the match. As the sun continued to beat down, tempers began to fray, much to the delight of corner back Jack Roche. Tackles intensified, both on and off the ball, as substitutes were introduced. Carnaross began to pump ball in on top of target man Cillian Comaskey, who collected, turned and fired over the bar to keep the Ross in touch. Substitute John L McGee, linked up well with Comaskey to fist over the bar. Paddy McDermott was excelling for the away side and he showed his prowess with 2 points to push Carnaross into the lead by the minimum. Just as Drumbaragh looked to be faltering, they responded with a quickfire 1-2, the goal coming from an excellent William Carry solo run.  The game entered its most turbulent period as the home side slowed down proceedings trying desperately to hold on to their lead. McDermott converted a free after an excellent press by the Carnaross forwards on Jake Balfe's kickout. With the clock entering the red, Carnaross turned the ball over twice at the Drums' 45 but both times , they were cleverly brought down, leading to black cards. McDermott landed a free from outside the 45 before Carnaross were reduced to 14. One late Ross delivery was cleared off the line, twice, before Drumbaragh emerged the two point victors.

Attentions now turn to hosting St.Ultan's this coming Saturday at 4pm in Páirc Naomh Chiarán.
