Navan O’Mahony’s 3-13 St Peters Dunboyne 1-12

Navan O’Mahony’s got off to a good start in the Div 2 HL, in a high scoring encounter in Paddy O’Brien Park. The home side were spurred on by two goals from Finn Malone.

St Peter’s got were quick off the mark, pointing from a free within thirty seconds of the throw-in. Jack Flynn responded quickly to equalise less than a minute later, while Cormac Keyes split the posts from a free to take the lead in the fourth minute. 

Navan O’Mahony’s pushed on for the next five minutes with Shane McCarthy and Paddy Dillon pointing from play before Keyes converted another free. In the 12th minute, Dunboyne broke this run with a point from a free. A goal opportunity for the visitors was cleared to safety by quick reactions from netminder Conor O’Dwyer.

In the fourteenth minute, Finn Malone found the net to extend his side’s lead and Keyes followed up with a point from play from the resulting puck-out. 

St Peter’s finished out the half stronger, scoring three points in four minutes before Keyes was accurate from a free in the 22nd minute. Three late frees, two in injury time, further narrowed the gap and two points separated the sides at the interval.

As they had done in the first half, St Peter’s opened the scoring in the second within half a minute from a free. Less than a minute later, they took a two-point lead when a low ball found its way to the net.

Malone’s second goal of the day came in the fifth minute, and put Navan O’Mahony’s ahead by the minimum. By the tenth minute, two points, one from a free and one from play left St Peter’s leading and with a numerical advantage following the dismissal of Jack McConnell on a second yellow card. 

Midway through the half, two frees from Keyes had drawn the sides level once again and in the seventeenth minute, the home side took the lead once more. Navan O’Mahony’s enjoyed their best period in the final quarter, outscoring St Peter’s by 1-04 toa point with Keyes and Dillon scoring points while McCarthy raised a green flag.

At the final whistle, seven points separated the sides and Navan O’Mahony’s took the points on offer.
