Navan O’Mahony’s 2-10 Boardsmill 3-05

Navan O’Mahony’s had to battle to the very end to get the points on offer in the opening round of the Div 5 HL this morning, played in glorious sunshine.

The visitors got off to a quick start, taking an early lead with a free. Navan O’Mahony’s were unlucky not to find the net when there was a scramble near the Boardsmill goal, but it came a few minutes later when Andrew Snow sent home a goal to put his side in the lead.

Barry McEvoy extended the lead with a well-taken point to put four between the sides before Boardsmill scored a goal. For the remainder of the half, Navan O’Mahony’s added two points from McEvoy and midfielder Brian Dunne, while Boardsmill found the net on two more occasions and had a goal shot saved by netminder Marcus McDonagh from a close range free.

Navan O’Mahony’s should have been well ahead at this stage, missing a number of opportunities in the half.

For most of the third quarter, very little could separate the sides and neither side managed to break away from the other, with both sides missing opportunities.

Navan O’Mahony’s back line proved strong, keeping Boardsmill to four points in the second half, with especially impressive performances from midfielder Colm O’Toole and wing back Peter McLoughlin.

In the final quarter, Navan O’Mahony’s managed to push ahead and were three points ahead and missed a number of chances for an insurance point. It was Boardsmill who got the next score of the game to go two points ahead.

Navan O’Mahony’s supporters were on edge till the final puck of the game, a 21 yard free for Boardsmill which could easily have been the winning of the game. With a full line beside him, McDonagh cleared the line and the ball to safety, to the sound of referee Eamon Barry’s whistle.
