April 20, 2024

Meath's Padraig O'Hanrahan

Down 3-24 Meath 0-25

Meath came out second best in this high scoring Joe McDonagh Cup opening round clash against Down played in ideal conditions at McKenna Park Ballycran.

Ratoath’s Padraig O’Hanrahan turned in an excellent display of marksmanship sending over 17 points for the visitors.

In the end Down’s ability to score goals proved the difference.

The recently returned Eamon Óg Ó Donnchadha got Meath on the scoreboard first. Further points from Seanie Martin, James Toher, Ó Donnchadha and an O’Hanrahan’s brace had Meath 0-6 to 0-3 in front after 12 minutes. Down’s first goal arrived soon after courtesy of Tim Prenter and by the break the home side were 1-15 to 0-13 in front.

O’Hanrahan sent over ten points in the second half and while Meath’s white flag tally was better than the winners further goals on the 42th and the 59th from Prenter and Daithi Sands minute sealed the win for Down.

Next up for Steven Clynch’s men is a home tie against Laois next Saturday at Lomans Park Trim.
