Simonstown 1-12 St. Ultans Cortown Gaels 1-9 after extra time

Simonstown claimed the LMFM Meath Minor Football Championship title after extra time over a very resilient St. Ultans Cortown Gaels in very soft underfoot conditions at Pairc Colmcille Kells. PHOTOS

Like two weeks ago when extra time failed to separate these two teams at Dunganny another exhibition was provided for the large crowd that attended on Bank Holiday Monday.

St. Ultans Cortown Gaels got the perfect start when Cillian Yore was fouled in the square and Alex Casserly converted the spot kick.

Simonstown hit back with points from Ruairi Brady and the impressive Aaron Farrelly. The combination side replied with a great score from half back Gareth Fegan before the eventual winners to control of matters.

Points from Nathan Ryan and Cian Newman along with an outstanding individual goal from Farrelly opened up a three point gap.

But as on so many occasions before Ultans Cortown fought back. Conor Finnegan and Oisin Durcan tied up the game with ten minutes left to play. Simonstown resumed control with fine scores from Newman and Brady to lead 1-6 to 1-4 at the break.

Farrelly extended the lead early in the second half before the combination side enjoyed their best period in the game. Three unanswered points from frees through Casserly (2) and Finnegan had the game tied up again.

The heavy rain didn’t help an already soft pitch but it was the eventual winners who gained control again with a brace of pointed frees from half forward Brady.

Ultans/Cortown refused to lie down. Centre back Tadgh Murray pointed and just before the final whistle Finnegan landed another free to send the game into extra time.

Simonstown made the push for home in the first half. Jamie Keane, Brady and Farrelly pointed and they went in at the break 1-12 to 1-9 in front. The final ten minutes failed to produce a score and Simonstown were crowned champions after another thrilling encounter.

After the game Minor Board Secretary Brian Kelly presented the cup to Simonstown captain Conor Staunton.

Simonstown scorers: Aaron Farrelly 1-3, Ruairi Brady 0-5, Cian Newman 0-2, Nathan Ryan and Jamie Keane 0-1 each.

St. Ultans Cortown Gaels scorers: Alex Casserly 1-2, Conor Finnegan 0-4, Gareth Fegan, Oisin Durcan and Tadgh Murray 0-1 each.
