SFC Group B: Browne goal wins it for The 'Moors

August 01, 2020

O'Mahony's Cormac McGuinness and Andy Tormey (Donaghmore Ashbourne) collide during the Meath SFC game at Skryne

Jamie Browne's third quarter goal was central to Donaghmore-Ashbourne's narrow win over Navan O'Mahonys at Skryne on Friday evening.

Donaghmore Ashbourne ....... 1-12
O'Mahonys ..... 0-12

Mick Deegan's men were good value for this opening round win as they were more economical in front of goal and fended off a late O'Mahonys' onslaught that might have salvaged something for the Navan-side.

Bryan Menton and Andrew Tormey created the opening for Browne's goal that left the nearby scoreboard reading 1-9 to 0-7.

Donaghmore-Ashbourne moved six clear on two occasions before the end of third quarter and did enough to register their first win over O'Mahonys in the SFC since the round robin stage in 2010.

From the water break to the finish O'Mahonys outscored the team in green by 0-3 to 0-1. Two third quarter Stephen Bray points were the highlights in the scoring department for the Navan-men.

Donaghmore-Ashbourne's Michael Deegan was the main scorer in the first-half. From the resumption that mantle passed to O'Mahonys' captain Ruairi O Coileain. By the end Deegan had 0-7, one more than O Coileain.

O'Mahonys got to within a goal of their opponents twice in the latter stages. Donaghmore-Ashbourne had sub Shaun Byrne dismissed as scores tightened and also lost defender James Redmond to a black card.

The scores were tied three times in the opening quarter. O Coileain's opening score gave O'Mahonys the lead for the only time. James O'Reilly's fisted point on the run was a standout moment for the side in hoops. Just before the water break Tormey restored Donaghmore-Ashbourne's lead which they took to the finish.

O'Mahonys played with an extra defender in the first-half and had their opponents within reach going into the break.

From the water-break to the interval, Donaghmore-Ashbourne outscored their opponents by 0-4 to 0-1. Duggie Dillon placed Jake Regan but the corner-forward skied his effort over for a point.

Donaghmore-Ashbourne were 0-8 to 0-4 to the good at the break before cutting the deficit in half within six minutes of resumption. The highlight of that sequence was Bray's first point with Regan assisting.

O'Mahonys responded well to Browne's goal but were unable to rescue something from this fixture.
