Number 10 pick: Meath's Best Team from our last four All-Ireland wins

April 04, 2020

Evan Kelly, Trevor Giles and David Beggy

Unprecedented quiet times on the GAA front and with no return on the horizon because of Covid-19 we have come up with a novel way to keeping your Royal GAA mind occupied.

Since 1987 we have won four All-Ireland finals. You the reader can have a say in picking our Best XV from that glorious era.

Three outstanding footballers wore the Number 10 jersey in those 4 All Ireland wins.

David Beggy proved a real inspiration and a breath of fresh air to the Meath half forward line. The O'Mahony's star wore the number 10 jersey in the wins over Cork in 1987 and 1988. The fastest ball carrier in that era he had too much pace for any defender. Along with the 2 All Ireland's 'Jinksy' went on to win 5 Leinster's, 2 NFL's and 2 All Stars.

Fast forward to 1996 and Trevor Giles started on the wing in the All Ireland final replay win over Mayo. One of the best players in the country for 10 years, Giles was awarded an All Star on three occasions. The double winning Footballer of the Year was on the 40 for the '99 win over Cork.

With Giles switching to the centre in 1999, Simonstown's Evan Kelly took over the jersey for our last All Ireland win. Three years prior the former Drumree man was left out of Seán Boylan's side for the Royals' replay victory over Mayo. Kelly later earned himself an All Star award in the right half-forward position for 2001.
