Oldcastle's Terry Farrelly

Oldcastle 3-18, Kilmainham 1-08

A beautiful afternoon at the manicured Moynalty grounds set the scene for the Intermediate Championship match between Oldcastle and Kilmainham this afternoon.

A big crowd were in attendance for the 2pm throw-in, and it was Kilmainham’s star Mickey Newman who took the first point. Darren Hawdon made good work to get hold of a Kilmainham kick-out soon after, and the ball was worked upfield by way of Terry Farrelly, Ronan Maguire, Oran Reilly, Robbie Farrelly, Paddy Gilsenan and finally in to the waiting Jason Scully for Oldcastle’s first point. Kilmainham responded with a point themselves, with that immediately followed by a Robbie Farrelly effort which came off the post, with Scully converting the ’45. It was Scully again who pulled down another Kilmainham kick-out which he passed on to Robbie Farrelly who passed to Colin Hawdon: he fed it beautifully to the waiting C.J. Healy who blasted it to the back of the net for a super goal. Pressure from the Oldcastle defence saw Newman shoot a wide, followed by a lovely Terry Farrelly intercept which he got forward to C.J., he was unlucky to see it rebound off the post but Robbie Farrelly was there to catch it and put it over.

With twelve minutes played, Oran Reilly took the next ball, passed on to Terry Farrelly, forward to Jason Scully and back again to Terry who was making a great run upfield, on to Oran Mulvanny and Robbie Farrelly. It was immediately obvious however, that Terry Farrelly had suffered a serious injury just after passing on the ball, and he received expert medical attention from Dr. Ann Marie Gilsenan, physio Luke Kelly and others on the pitch. An hour and sixteen minutes passed before the ambulance arrived, and a further fourteen before they left the field, to a rapturous round of applause. Terry is doing great since and will make a full recovery, and we wish him all the best and hope to see him back in the jersey before too long.

By now, word was coming through that Meath Hill had beaten Drumbaragh in the other match in the group, but we wouldn't have a result for some time yet. The match eventually resumed, with the Oldcastle lads more determined than ever. Robbie Farrelly finally took the free he had been awarded an hour and a half earlier. It eventually worked itself to Ronan Maguire who was himself awarded a free, and converted. Cian McPartland was having a fantastic game, and got a great ball on to Jason Scully who ran it upfield, on to the waiting Colin Hawdon who found Paddy Gilsenan, who was already making a run and blasted the ball to the back of the net. C.J. took the next point, before Newman pointed a two frees for the opposition. Ronan Maguire took the next, Robbie Farrelly adding a free. A super point from play by Colin Hawdon followed, with Oran Mulvanny taking his first point soon after. Oldcastle were dominating all over the pitch, with Ger Reidy keeping Mickey Newman quiet, nevertheless they got some chances with Oldcastle goalie Packie Kevin called on to make a good save right about now. He passed the ball out to Dylan Garrigan who found Scully, back to Garrigan and back to Scully as they worked it upfield at speed and got it to C.J. who once again found the back of the net. Oran Mulvanny added a point just before the half-time whistle, with the score standing Oldcastle 3-10, Kilmainham 0-05.

The second-half began with a point from C.J., followed by a lovely point from Colin Hawdon from way out, and a Robbie Farrelly free. Newman then added two frees and a penalty for Kilmainham, but even that boost couldn’t lift them, and Oldcastle held them scoreless from then, with Colin Hawdon taking a great score while under pressure, and Scully adding another. Stephen Lawless chipped a nice pass to the waiting C.J. for the next point, with Keith Connell taking the next, and a Robbie Farrelly free the final score of the match, the scoreline reading Oldcastle 3-18, Kilmainham 1-08. A bittersweet victory, but Terry will be delighted with the win, and we send best wishes from everyone at Oldcastle Gfc.
