Sad to report the death of St Vincents, Ardcath, Meath and Leinster football star, (Mick) Micheal Dunican.

Mick first came to prominence on a fine St Vincents combination which swept to Meath intermediate football honours in 1953. Two years later the men from the Hill in east Meath won the Keegan Cup for their first and only time. Kells Harps were beaten on 1955 county final day.

Mick, an oustanding fielder of the ball, was a key component in this Ardcath surge to the top and soon came to the attention of the county selectors. He became one of the first names on the Meath team sheet right through the second part of the fifties and into the sixties.

Unfortunately for Mick this period coincided with a rather bleak spell for the Meath senior team as the provincial title eluded the county between 54 and 64.

But he was good enough to wear the green of Leinster and is the proud holder of a Railway Cup medal as Ulster were overcome in the 1962 decider.

The Vincents again made it to the Meath senior final in 1963 but proved second best to the outstanding Navan O Mahonys selection of this time. Strangely Mick Dunican was one of only two surviving members from 1955.

Mick is survived by his wife Kathleen, sons Jim, Ed, Paul and John and daughter Kay.

Reposing at his home in Cloghan, Ardcath (A42 CC98) on Wednesday from 4pm until 8pm. Removal on Thursday to St. Mary's Church, Ardcath, arriving for Funeral Mass at 11.00am. Burial afterwards in Ardcath Cemetery.
