Tribute to late Gaels

July 16, 2019

Kevin (Gus) Lenehan, Michael Reilly and Cormach Murrihy RIP.

Tributes were paid to a number of Meath Gaels who passed away recently, at last night’s county committee gathering in Dunganny.

Brendan Cummins led the tributes to Kevin (Gus) Lenehan who played wing back on the Meath team that brought the Sam Maguire Cup back to the county for only the second time, following their All-Ireland final victory over Kerry in 1954.

He said that Kevin gave great service to the county for the best part of a decade and also lined out with Duleek and then St Patrick’s. Gus as he was fondly known was a great supporter of the Stamullen club and was a familiar figure at games for many years. Cummins complimented the St Patrick’s club for giving Gus a great send off on the day of his funeral in Balbriggan.

Michael Reilly (Crossakiel) was remembered for his long association with hurling in the county. TJ Reilly said Michael had a great love for the game and was a former chairman of the hurling board as well as a prominent referee.

Kilskyre delegate Peter Byrne paid tribute to Michael for his association with the club over many years.

Ratoath delegate Andy Fahy paid tribute to the late Cormach Murrihy who died suddenly in New York. Fahy told delegates that Mr Murrihy emigrated to New York from Ratoath at an early age where he became a successful businessman. He was a regular visitor back to Ireland and was a great supporter and benefactor to Ratoath and was also involved in a Meath GAA fundraiser in the States a number of years back.
