A proposal from St Colmcille’s delegate James Kelly that the club championship not recommence on the weekend of August 10/11th, as per Fixture Planner, in the event of Meath not qualifying for the All-Ireland semi-finals, received strong support at last night’s county committee meeting in Dunganny.

The Cille’s delegate enquired as to the CCC plans regarding fixtures if Meath reached the last four of the All-Ireland series. John Daly, chairman of the CCC, said if such a scenario arose they would have to reschedule games but at present they were planning for Round 3 games in the SFC and IFC the weekend after Meath play their final Super 8 match against Kerry.

Kelly said it would be very unfair to ask county players who had played four matches in such a short period to line out with their clubs the following week and suggested that club games be cancelled for a further seven days.

“It is a poor way of rewarding players by asking them to play with their clubs so soon after a county game,” Kelly said. He was supported by Pat Jennings (Summerhill) who said it would also be disrespectful to the clubs involved.

Paddy Ward (Dunshaughlin) said the county owed a lot to the present group of players who had worked so hard to win promotion in the league and then qualify for the Super 8s.

“We owe it to them to give them time to recover, we need to give our county players something back,” Ward said.

Chairman Peter O’Halloran said he couldn’t put the proposal to the floor as it was contrary to rules. However he said he would ask the CCC to have another look at it in view of the feelings of the delegates but said the schedule was very tight.

John Daly said that the CCC had to think of all players, including the ‘ordinary club player.’
