B FL Div 5: O'Mahonys are deserving winners

June 17, 2019

A good win for Navan O'Mahonys

Our B League D5 team took to the field, away in Moynalty, facing an in-form home team with three wins from their last five outings.

Navan O'Mahonys 1-17 Moynalty 1-6

Featuring a number of changes in personnel O'Mahonys started at a high tempo with a high pressing game where the forward line ensured that the Moynalty defenders were never in a position to find the easy pass from the defence. This pressure resulted in a number of opportunities from frees in the opening 15 minutes which were expertly despatched from the ever-accurate boots of Ciaran McGuinness and Barry McEvoy.

The returning Evan Bird at corner forward scored an inspirational point off his right foot from close to the side-line to keep O'Mahonys in front. Following some late pressure from Moynalty towards the end of the first half it looked like Moynalty were beginning to stamp their authority on the game going into the break. However, when Jack Walsh reached a foot over the crossbar in the dying moments of the first half to catch the ball from a Moynalty free, the large crowd of supporters who travelled sensed that the game might swing towards O'Mahonys in the second half. Going in level at 1:3 to 6 points the game was in the balance.

John Nugent and Brian Reilly opted to take the half time team talk on the pitch and when play resumed it was clear that the O'Mahonys side were decidedly motivated to ensure that the evening was going to belong to O'Mahonys. Staunch defending was the order of the day across the entire pitch and the result of this was that the home side failed to register a score until 25 minutes of the second half had elapsed. Having picked off 4 points in as many minutes at the start of the second half O’Mahonys never relented and kept the scoreboard ticking right the way through the game. The crucial score was sent to the net with clinical accuracy by Barry McEvoy following an exceptionally well worked full pitch team move.

We saw many outstanding individual performances, but the amount of effective work that Craig Nolan at corner back, successfully keeping the the Moynalty dangerman scoreless for the entire second half was being commented on by supporters and teammates alike in the moments after the game.

Finishing on a score line of 1:6 to 1:17 O’Mahonys ran out deserving winners.
