Syddan Report

Castletown 1-16 Syddan 1-7

Syddan made the worst possible start to their IFC campaign when going down to a heavy defeat at the hands of neighbours Castletown at Pairc Tailteann on Saturday.

A haul of 1-7 from Kevin Ross boosted the winners, who were involved in a relegation play-off in 2018, to a clear-cut win.

Castletown dominated throughout and were never seriously threatened after laying the foundations for victory in the opening half.

Syddan were without a number of regulars including talisman Daire Rowe and they struggled throughout for scores against the side who went into the game with a 100% league record.

Top scorer Ross had accounted for three points before Gary Farrelly opened Syddan's account on 11 minutes. Further scores from Ross (two) and Barry Smith left it 0-7 to 0-1 by the end of the opening quarter.

Farrelly had Syddan's second point, also from a free, before Castletown increased their lead even further with a goal from Ross and a Darren Finney point.

Syddan were given a glimmer of hope when Farrelly converted from the penalty spot following a foul on Cormac Rowe and Paddy Farrelly hit their only point of the half from play to leave them trailing 1-3 to 1-11 at the break.

Damien Ginnity increased the Castletown lead on the restart and Syddan never threatened a revival at any stage. They managed just a single point in the third quarter from a Farrelly free.

Padraic Dillon had two fine long range efforts from play while Cormac Rowe was also on the mark for the losers. However Ross and Darren Finney continued to be a constant threat in the Castletown attack and they managed to keep the scoreboard ticking over throughout the half.
