FL Div 2: A point apiece in Dunderry

February 11, 2019

Dunderry's Adam Kelly

Dunderry 2-5
Ballinabrackey 1-8

These early rounds of the league aren’t for the faint hearted. On another cold and windy morning in Dunderry the points were shared between the home side and the men from Ballinabrackey.

If ever there was a football match to use the cliche “A game of two halves” this was it.

Dunderry playing with the wind at their backs raced into a 3 point to 1 lead with a fine score from Aero Newman and a couple of frees from Dermot Kelly. It was a Damien Carroll free that put the Bracks on the score board. Then a major turning point in the game arrived, a well worked hand passing move ended up in the hands of Conor Farrell who rounded the keeper to slot into an empty net but the referee had harshly judged Bomber to have over carried and ruled the goal out.

Moments later another fine move from Dunderry and a long ball into the edge of the square which wasn’t dealt with fell to the feet of Adam Kelly who dribbled the ball into space and found the back of the net, a goal Mo Salah would be proud of!

Damien Carroll and Dermot Kelly again trades frees to leave the score at 1-4 to 0-2 at the interval.

The second half resumed and Ballinabrackey flew out of the blocks, Carroll again doing the damage with a quick fire 1-2 from play in the opening 10 minutes to level the game up.

Jordy Martin then scored a beauty from out on the wing off the outside of the right boot to put Dunderry back in front momentarily.

The Bracks then resumed control of the game and went ahead with 3 unanswered points to leave the score 1-5 to 1-7.

Somewhat against the run of play Dunderry managed to score another goal through Luke Martyn who punched the ball home after a long range shot or pass (who knows) from Davey McCormack.

Dunderry then started to find a bit of rhythm against the wind and were causing a few problems but not capitalising on the score board. Hitting the post and having a stone wall penalty turned away.

In the last play of the game the Bracks were awarded a free from an extremely tight angle and Seamus Curry made no mistake from the placed ball to ensure both teams left with a point apiece.

The small ball takes centre stage next weekend as our Intermediate Hurlers head to Boardsmill for the opening round of the league and our Junior Hurlers play against Killyon.
