HL Div 1: All square in Trim

February 19, 2018

Dunboyne's Sean McGrath with Gerard Dwayne Trim

Dunboyne 1-12 Trim 1-12

Dunboyne opened their Division 1 Senior League campaign with a spirited draw against a good Trim outfit in Lomans Park.

It was a tight opening half with both teams sharing good spells of possession, Trim were shooting into the swimming pool end on a damp morning where fast flowing hurling was not going to be the order of the day. The sides went in at the break level on 7 points apiece with both sides missing a number of chances to have taken an interval lead.

The second half had some tough exchanges and followed much the same pattern as the first with both teams adding 1.05 to their 1st half tallies. There were a few off the ball exchanges as both teams got to grips with soft underfoot conditions.

Both teams will be happy to have taken something from a game they could easily have lost. The game finished on  1.12 each.

Dunboyne scorers: Sean Quigley 0-8, Sean McGrath 1-2, Daragh Gilmartin 0-2.

Dunboyne: Johnny Mitchell, Sean Moran, Niall Watters, Fergal O'Neill, Michael O Grady, Conor O Shea, Ger Murphy, Stephen Moran, Daragh Gilmartin, Sean Quigley, Neil Hackett, Keith Doyle, Sean McGrath, Jack Cox, Niall Smyth. Subs; Eoin Ryan for Niall Watters, Jamie Gilmartin for Neil Hackett, Killian Smith for Stephen Moran, Conor Gilmartin for Keith Doyle, all on 40 minutes, Keith Doyle for Fergal O Neill 50 mins.

Trim Report

Trim 1-12 Dunboyne 1-12

Trim hurlers took on Dunboyne on Sunday morning in this first round league tie in St Lomans Park. Great credit must go to groundsman Luke Gaynor, this was the third match in less than twenty four hours on the Trim pitch and was in great condition once again.

Both teams fielded county players with Sean Quigley, Sean McGrath and Michael O'Grady starting for Dunboyne and Neill Heffernan and Charlie Ennis playing for Trim.

Dunboyne held the upper hand for most in this closely contested match and will be disappointed not to have gone home with the two points.

The visitors raced into a two point lead in the first five minutes with well taken points from Quigley. Neil Heffernan and Damo McGee replied for Trim to bring the sides level with twelve minutes gone. The hurling was not of the fast flowing variety with many basic errors being made by both sides who were looking very ring rusty. Andy Dinan fired Trim into the lead with a well taken point from 40 meters from an acute angle on the club house side. Dunboyne again went into a three point lead only for Trim to fight back with great scores from Damo McGee, Neill Heffernan and a great long range point from Ryan Andrews. The sides traded one more point each before the half time whistle to leave the score at seven points each.

Dunboyne were out of the blocks very fast in the second half and were four points up after thirteen minutes. Andy Dinan got Trim back into the game when he pulled on a loose ball in the square and fired the ball into the back of the net. The Reds were now just one point in arrears. With seven minutes to go Dunboyne got a free on the twenty meter line, up stepped county man Quigley to take the free who surprisingly went for a goal which was very well saved by Trim keeper Charlie Ennis. The breaking ball bounced out to corner forward Niall Smith and he blasted an unstoppable shot to the top corner of the Trim net. Trim were now four points down with six minutes to go and to their credit the men in Red never gave up and scored the final four points of the match to earn a well deserved draw. The final four scores came from Brian Dowling, Damo McGee, Neill Heffernan and Aaron Winters.
