O'Mahony 'bewildered' by Mayo collapse
May 21, 2007
John O'Mahony was at a loss to explain Mayo's dramatic collapse at the hands of arch rivals Galway in their Connacht SFC first round tie at Pearse Stadium.
O'Mahony, whose general election hopes are unlikely to be helped by this result, promised to get to the bottom of the display before Mayo begin focusing on the first round of the All-Ireland qualifiers in seven weeks' time.
"There will be all kinds of comparisons about all the bad days Mayo have had, these will all be resurrected now. We have to analyse it, look at what went wrong, and why we could only get a performance like that," he said.
"It just wasn't there for some reason. It follows the trend of Mayo and Galway in the last few years when it seems to be every second year.
"I expect to get a negative reaction, but that's the way it works. I am in it long enough to know that. But for us now, it's about staying together, and seeing who has the will to turn this around, management and players together. We win together and we lose together."
