Mayo to stick to red jerseys

February 23, 2006
Mayo have decided to wear red jerseys for the remainder of the National League, but are expected to revert to their traditional green and red for the championship. Mickey Moran's charges wore their away strip in the wins over Kerry and Offaly and, while they will have no choice but to go back to their red and green colours for the clash with Cork on March 19, they will wear red in four out of the five remaining games. "There is no rule on wearing alternate jerseys in the GAA," said Mayo secretary Sean Feeney. "But this year we're in the same group as Kerry, Offaly and Fermanagh, who all wear similar colours to us. "Because we'd have to change three times, we felt we'd stick with the red so that the players get used to it and get into a routine - that's very important. When you're playing under lights or on a wet day, a predominantly green jersey can be hard to pick out. Furthermore, scientific evidence shows that red jerseys are easier to pick out against the grass."
