27 spectators watch Kerry beat Mayo
July 02, 2005
Over 80,000 turned up when these two counties meet in the All-Ireland football final last year but there were just 27 in attendance when the sliothar was thrown in for this Christy Ring Cup game at Pearse Stadium.
Kerry 5-16
Mayo 0-12
Perhaps we can put it down to the fact that the outcome was predictable before the game and Kerry certainly lived up to their pre match billing as favourites as they had six points on the board without reply inside the first seven minutes.
Mayo awoke from that slumber and aided by the breeze scored some fine points through Adrian Freeman to half the deficit but a Kerry goal from John Mike Dooley just before the break helped them to a 1-10 to 0-7 interval lead.
Mike Conway grabbed a second Kerry goal after the restart and with further majors arriving from Dooley (2) and Conway, the second half lost any competitive bite early on.
