Geraghty, Kathleen

January 28, 2014
The death took place on Friday, January 10, 2014 of Kathleen Geraghty, Carnaclay, Westport. She was daughter of Pat and Bridget Joyce and was predeceased by her husband Paddy, sister Mollie, Derrycoosh, Castlebar and cousin Kathleen, Canada. She was a valued member of the local parish community and, despite reaching the venerable age of 91 years, her passing caused much sadness in the general area.
She was committed to her faith and daily prayer and regular attendance at Mass was a feature of her life. She knew and appreciated God's love in her life and shared it with others. Mass in St Mary's Church, Westport, was not just an occasion to practice her faith, but a regular opportunity to meet friends and neighbours for a chat.
Kathleen lived her 91 years to the full. She looked forward to meeting friends and having the chat and was a great conversationalist. She had a fantastic memory and loved going down memory lane, relating stories about times past and talking about her camogie days playing with Derry Croaghpatricks. She herself was a very accomplished camogie player and won many plaudits in the game.
Only two weeks before she died she was speaking on the phone to her first cousin in Canada (who has since passed away) and her great friend in England, Lena McGee (nee Reynolds), Drummindoo, Westport).
Kathleen often spoke of her visits to Canada and England which she greatly enjoyed but her heart was always in Carnaclay with her family. She was at the centre of everything that happened in the life of her family and took a deep interest in all her grandchildren and in what they were doing. They kept her young at heart and they were truly heartbroken when she passed away.
For the past two months Kathleen's health deteroriated but she bore this setback with great patience and was wonderfully cared for by her family in whose company she passed away so peacefully. She will be dearly missed by all.
Removal took place from McGing's Funeral Home on Saturday, January 11 to St Mary's Church where the reception ceremony was conducted by Fr Karl Burns and Fr Micheal MacGreil. Requiem Mass was concelebrated by Fr Denis Carney (a cousin and dear friend of the family), Fr Karl Burns, Fr Micheal MacGreil and Fr Charlie McDonnell. Family members took part in the funeral liturgy which was heartfully enhanced by the music and singing of St Mary's Church Choir.
The respect, esteem and genuine affection in which Kathleen was held was reflected in the large numbers who attended her wake, removal and funeral. In the Mass homily Fr Denis Carney paid many generous tributes to Kathleen whom he had come to know so well down through the years. She was the very soul of hospitality and her devotion to her family was total and unconditional. She was also a person of very deep faith and prayer was an important feature of her daily life. "Our faith tells us through the Resurrection of Christ that she is now enjoying the light of Heaven with her beloved Paddy," he said.
Burial took place in Aughavale Cemetery. She is survived by her sons Padraic, Sean and Gerry, daughters Maureen, Evelyn and Josephine, sons-in-law Malachy, Noel and Paddy, daughters-in-law Cait,, Chris and Joan, nephew Michael, 18 grandchildren, relatives and friends.
May her gentle soul have peaceful rest.
