Former Mayo selector Pado Moran dies in Ballyhaunis

The death took place last week of Patrick (Pado) Moran, Ballindrehid, Ballyhaunis. Pado was closely associated with the Mayo GAA scene for many years and served as a selector with the county senior team back in the 1980s during the time Johnny Carey was in charge of the panel.

He had a life-long interest in the GAA and was a member of the only Ballyhaunis team to win the Mayo senior championship back in 1958. Pado played at corner forward and sported the No 13 jersey. His achievement in being part of the '58 team was all the more remarkable as he had sustained a broken leg less than two years before making his comeback at top level.

Twenty years later, he was a member of the Ballyhaunis team that won the Mayo Over 30s Cup in 1978. This was a competition that was played for a number of years before being disbanded entirely.
Pado and his brother Brendan operated Moran Brothers Constructions, Tooraree Road, Ballyhaunis. They were associated with numerous projects throughout the East Mayo area including the building of, the church in Uriaur, Ballyhaunis
Fire Station and Library, as well as several major projects for Mayo County Council.
Pado took an active interest in politics and was a strong supporter of the Fianna Fail party down through the years. He was much to the fore at election times and retained a life-long interest in current affairs.
An early riser, Pado was for many years one of the first customers in Caulfield's Ship in Upper Main Street to collect his favourites newspapers.
He was highly thought of throughout the community and news of his sudden death was received with much sadness and regret.

Removal took place from Donnellan's Funeral Home to St Patrick's Church, Ballyhaunis with burial in the local cemetery following Requiem Mass celebrated by Fr Stephen Farragher, assisted by Fr Enda Lyons and Fr Plunkett (from England), a cousin of Pado. The coffin was draped in the Ballyhaunis flag and members of the local GAA club as well as Fianna Fail formed a guard of honour.
He is survived by his wife Vona (nee Waldron), brother Brendan, sister Bernadette, Alacoque and Angela, uncle Richard, relatives, neighbours and many friends.
