Mayo defender Kevin Keane wants an All-Ireland medal.

In fairness, we all do, but for many the achievement is not even a remote possibility. Keane, on the otherhand was just 70 minutes away from getting one last September.

However, Donegal took the spoils on that occasion and now the Westerners must start from scratch again as they face Galway in the opening round of the Connacht championship on Sunday.

"An All-Ireland medal, that's the ultimate goal," Keane told the Mayo News. "That's what drives you when you are out in the dark evenings in January and February, and you have to go away and do your bit on the side on a wet, windy night in Sligo or wherever.

"That's when the hard yards are put in, and you hope it'll all pay off when the sun is shining on the May day. It's an honour to represent your county at any level, but especially at senior level. I'm very proud of it and I'm very honoured.

"Please God some day soon I'll be landing Sam Maguire here in Mayo."
