Huge crowds turn out to pay respects to footballer and businessman Paddy Jordan

Huge crowds paid their respects last night (Monday) at the home of former county footballer and businessman Paddy Jordan. Mr. Jordan, Rehins, Foxford Road, Ballina, passed away peacefully on Saturday last at the age of 87.

For many years Mr. Jordan operated the family business, Jordan's Bar and restaurant on Station Road, which is now being run by his son Peter and daughter-in-law Ann. A devoted Stephenites' man, Paddy was a member of the club's 1947 County Championship winning team and went on to represent the county at senior and junior. He was a member of the All-Ireland winning junior side of 1950 and was part of the panel that won Sam Maguire in 1951, the last time the All-Ireland senior title crossed the Mayo boarder. He also played with Ballaghaderreen GAA Club for a period as a young man in the 1940s and won a junior county title with them.

Former Mayo manager and Fine Gael Deputy John O'Mahony remarked that Mr Jordan had been a great servant of Mayo as a family man, businessman and through his involvement in the GAA. "He was an absolute gentleman and was always very supportive and encouraging of the Mayo team and management over the years and I offer my deepest sympathies to his family." Paddy's commitment to the Stephenites was lifelong and he was honoured by the club as recently as last year.
