Moran, Ciaran

June 19, 2012
The recent death of Ciaran Moran at University College Hospital, Galway is being mourned by his family and friends both near and far.

Born in Mulranny in 1924 he was the third son of four of the late Francis and Teresa Moran (Nee Chambers). He was predeceased by his brothers Frank and Brendan both of whom died at a young age. He was a well-known publican and retired farmer. After the death of his parents, he was reared in Newport by his grandparents on the Chambers side of the family.

He attended national school in Newport and Newtownmountbrown, in Kiltimagh. Later he went on to board in St Jarlath's College, Tuam and afterwards studied at Mountbellow Agricultural College. He worked in the Chambers (George's Street) family business and farmed with his uncles until he met his wife Shelia (nee Butler) who came west from Co Waterford to work in Mulranny Hotel in the fifties. They married in 1963 and re opened Moynish House which was originally owned by Ciaran's late father. He continued to work in the bar right up until he went into hospital where he died rather suddenly. He enjoyed meeting people and his knowledge of history will be sorely missed. Ciaran made time for everyone and never rushed anybody.

A true gentleman, his patience was renowned, especially regarding his love of fly-fishing and fly-tying. He served as treasurer of Newport and Burrishoole Angling Club for several years. He also enjoyed hunting and training red-setters. He continued to play the 25 card game up until a few weeks before his death. He was looking forward to the GAA championships as he loved the discussions that took place in the bar. He played football for Newport and won a junior medal in 1949 with Mulranny alongside his life-long friend, Peadar Kilroy. Ciaran enjoyed good health throughout his life up until the last few weeks in hospital and was making a great recovery until his sudden death. The high esteem in which he was held was reflected in the large number of people who visited him in hospital and attended his funeral.

His passing on June 1st has left a void in the lives of the family, his many friends, wonderful neighbours and all the customers he shared a laugh and treasured moments with over the years. His great wealth of knowledge will be sorely missed by all who knew him. Ciaran is survived by his wife Shelia, daughters Teresa (Clonmel), Fionnuala (Castlebar) and son Ciaran (Mulranny), sons-in-law Paul Fitzgerald and David Monaghan and beloved grandchildren Aine, Emily, Enda and Niall, also his brother Mel (Mulranny), nephews, nieces, other relatives, customers, neighbours and a wide circle of friends. Fr Declan Carroll PP., Newport was principal celebrant of the Requiem Mass and officiated at the graveside with concelebrant and life-long friend of Ciaran, Fr Attie Devine. Fr Carroll gave a beautiful homily and eulogy which captured Ciaran's joy of life and the spirit in which he lived it. The musical arrangement was performed by Caroline and Belinda Ginnelly, his cousin Frank Chambers, goddaughter Sarah Chambers and granddaughter Aine Monaghan. Pat and Tom Mulloy performed a song in his honour as Ciaran was laid to rest in Murrivaugh cemetery on June 4. May Ciaran's noble soul have peaceful rest.
