Foster, Christy

July 12, 2011
The recent death of Christy Foster, The Square, Claremorris evoked much sadness and regret throughout the area. Christy was a legendary character around the town for many years, he was 92.

In his younger days, Christy was a noted athlete and won numerous prizes at the big sports days around the region. He was also deeply involved in the local GAA scene and was especially associated with organising the town street leagues which were so popular back then.

He had a lifelong interest in greyhounds and was a great handler of dogs. According to renowned greyhound enthusiast Jim Connaughton from Loughanamon, the highlight of his career in that sport came when he trained Rolling Flame to win the Clarke Cup at Newbridge in 1970. He was also honoured with a special appreciation award by Galway Greyhound Stadium for services to the sport. It was fitting that Owen Treston brought along a greyhound to walk behind the hearse on Christy's last journey to St Colman's Church.

For many years Christy was employed by An Post and delivered mail around town. People always recall that they seldom saw him walking, invariably he was running along as he went about his business.
Christy, who was predeceased by his wife Teresa, is survived by his sons Johnny and Tom, daughter Marie, son-in-law, grandchildren, relatives, neighbours and good friends.
