Judge, Bernie

May 31, 2011
Bernie Judge, Shanaghy, Ballina who died last week at the age of 51, was formerly Boland from Knockmore and was one of the top players on the Mayo ladies senior team back in the 1980s. She had been coping with an illness in recent months.

Bernie, along with her husband Declan, operated the family pub and business, The River Inn, in Bonniconlon for many years. She first came to sporting prominence with her local club Knockmore in the 1970s and won an All Ireland U16 medal with the county. She retained a life-long interest in GAA and sport in general and had a huge regard and respect for all aspects of the Irish culture.

Ita Hannon (nee Flatley), secretary of the Connacht Ladies Council, said she heard the news with much sadness. "Bernie was an outstanding player, one of the best in the county back then. She was brilliant and the standard she achieved was so high that she was chosen on the Connacht team to play in the inter-provincial series. On behalf of everyone associated with the sport, I want to extend condolences to the Judge and Boland families on their great loss."

Bernie was held in the highest regard by all who knew her and will be greatly missed by her devoted family and legion of friends.
The very large attendances at the funeral ceremonies were reflective of the special regard and affection in which Bernie was held by so many. A wake was held in the family home and removal took place to St Muredach's Cathedral, Ballina. The funeral proceeded to Bonniconlon Cemetery following Requiem Mass on Wednesday celebrated by Fr Peter Gallagher PP, Bonniconlon who was assisted by Fr Tommy Towey PP (Ballysadare), Fr Gerry Gillespie PP (Dromore West), Fr Gerry O'Hora (Ballina), Fr Bill Melody (Notre Dame, Indiana), and Canon Christy McLoughlin (Kilmactigue).

Guards of Honour were provided by the Knockmore and Bonniconlon Ladies GAA Clubs, Ardnaree Sarsfields GAA and Moy Villa soccer club.
Bernie is deeply regretted by her husband Declan, sons Neil, Cathal and John, grandson Donnacha, sister Margaret, brothers Des, Liam, Henry and Noel, mother-in-law Mary, sisters-in-law, brother-in-law, relatives and many friends.
