Garrymore's John McWalter laid to rest

South Mayo is in mourning following the funeral at the weekend of well-known community activist John McWalter. The popular Garrymore man, who was aged just 54, passed away suddenly on Friday morning last, causing sadness across the entire region.

A stalwart of Garrymore GAA Club, John played football in his youth and was on the successful three-in-a-row Garrymore team in the 70's. He met and married fellow community activist Margaret Leahy and the couple had four children. The family spent a number of years living in America.

When they returned home in 1995, John again became involved with the club and held every position on the executive over the years, including chairman. He as also involved with training underage teams as well as other sporting activities locally, most recently basketball.

Apart from his involvement in sport, John joined the South West Mayo development Company in 2004, becoming co-ordinator of the rural social scheme (RSS) in South West Mayo three years ago. He held the position up until his untimely death last week.
John had a brilliant working knowledge of the RSS and shaped policy in this regard. He was an ardent community man and had a great understanding of the importance of locality and community. He also served on a number of committees across the region.
John is mourned by his wife Margaret: sons Ian and James; daughters Niamh and Aisling; extended family, colleagues and a large circle of neighbours and friends.
His remains reposed at Carey's funeral Home in Ballindine on Saturday evening and members of Garrymore GAA Club, as well as his work colleagues formed a guard of honour to Ballyglass Church. He was laid to rest in Ballyglass cemetery on Sunday afternoon following his funeral mass.
