Donnellan, Paddy

The late Paddy Donnellan, Barnacarroll The death took place of Paddy Donnellan, Barnacarroll. It was with sadness and regret that news of the passing was received around his home area. Paddy was in his mid-70's and was out driving the day before he died. A man of gentle and unassuming nature, Paddy was a good friend to many. The "man on the hill" was a popular favourite with all in the area. He loved to chat to neighbours and could often be seen sitting on the wall outside his traditional hone while whiling away the time. He was at his best and most relaxed when in the company of good friends and neighbours. All his life was spent in Barnacarroll area and he had an intuitive knowledge of the people in the area and the lie of the land. Paddy came from the old tradition and had great respect for the people and their way of life. While he did some farming in former times, he had his land let for several years. Still, he always retained a big interest in all matters relating to the land and the livestock scene. It was part of his life and what he knew best. He always took special care of his car and ensured it was spick and span every time he took it out on the road. Indeed, Paddy had purchased a new automatic car just two months before his sudden death in the general hospital in Castlebar. In earlier years, Paddy was a regular at many of the dances throughout the region and had a good knowledge of the big showbands of the era. He was also known to sing a few songs when the occasion demanded an he could deliver them in style. Paddy was a lifelong pioneer and was presented with a gold pin some years ago. He took an interest in sport. especially GAA, and followed the championship on television and the radio. He loved his favourite television shows and was also a keen listener to Mid West Radio over the past two decades. A regular at Barnacarroll Mass for many years, Paddy's gentle presence, engaging conversation and pleasant smile will be missed by those who congregated outside the church at the end of mass for the weekly chat. He was gracious and affable gentleman who found time to share with all. Farewell, Paddy. Removal took place from Donnellan's Funeral Home to Barnacarroll church with burial in the adjoining cemetery following Requiem Mass celebrated by Fr Colm Burke and assisted by fr Tommy Commins(Cloonfad) and Fr Dan O'Neill from the SMA order. Paddy, who was predeceased by his only sister Peggy (England) about five years ago, is survived by his relations, neighbours and friends. Courtesy of the Mayo News 5th August 2008
