Mulloy, Steve

July 22, 2008
The late Steve Mulloy As already briefly reported in the Mayo News, the death took place on June 29 of Steve Mulloy (74) of Keel, Achill, and Cleveland, Ohio. He was born in August, 1933, to Anthony Mulloy and his wife Elizabeth (nee White). He met his future wife, Annie O'Donnell of Dooagh, in Achill but, in common with with many others, as a result of the economic climate of the time, Annie emigrated to Cleveland in February, 1954. Steve Followed to the US in May 1954, and within three weeks he had become a member of the west side Irish American club, a close association that continued right up to his death. He went on to serve four one-year terms as president of that club. Steve married Anne in Cleveland, and they raised a large , closely-knit family. He had joined 'Laborers local 310' shortly after arriving in Cleveland and was a general labourer for the group for 40 years, working in numerous construction projects around greater Cleveland. Steve was a great man to look out for any Achill person going to Cleveland; he was always ready with advice and guidance, and helped hundreds of people set themselves up after arriving in America. Steve was a member of the United Irish Societies and served as its executive Director from 1983 through 1986. He helped organise Cleveland's annual St Patrick's Day parade for the societies from 1974 up to the current years event. He was a founding member of the Mayo Societies of Greater Cleveland, the Cleveland Branch of the Irish National Caucus and the St Jarlath's Gaelic Football Club. In his early years, he played with the St Patrick's Gaelic Football Club and was a member of the Shamrock Pipe Band. He played in the band when it won the All-American Pipe band award in 1957 at Iona College, New York. Steve also acted previously as an officer of Irish Northern Aid. Steve was honoured as the '200 Man of the Year' by the west side Irish American Club. He served as Grand Marshal of the 2007 St Patrick's Day Parade, and in 2008 he received the Mayo Society of Cleveland 'Man of the Year' Award. Fund raising was an important activity for Steve. He raised money not only for Cleveland charities like the little Brothers and Sisters of the Eucharist, the St Augustine Church Hunger Centre and the west side Irish-American Club, but also for several Achill charities and organisations. In 2003, Steve led a delegation from Cleveland, including the presiding Mayor, Jane Campbell, to Mayo to oversee the official twinning of Cleveland and the home his heart never left behind, Achill Island. The Official recognition of this unique bond would never have taken place but for his initiative and dedication and its ongoing success is a testament to his enduring love for Achill and her people. He was the 'Host with the Most';no matter whether it was an official delegation or friends travelling to Cleveland, no efforts were spared to make their trip a successful one. He was ahead of many agencies in being first at arranging many tours to Ireland for a variety of groups from America. Achill, traditional, music and the Irish language coupled with a visit to his old alma mater, now home to Comhlacht Forbartha Aitiuil Acla, formed an integral part to all of these tours. Steve Mulloy was predeceased by his son, Michael, brother, Sean, and sisters, Margaret Sweeney and Brenda Gallagher. He is survived by his loving wife, Annie; children, Anthony, Mary, Stephen, Patrick, John, Thomas, Brendan, Terence and Anne; grandchildren , Colin, Anna, Patrick, Elizabeth, Stephen, Angela, Delia, Deirdre, Conor and Patrick; great grandchildren, Mackenzie and Jakob; brother, Tony (Ballinrobe and Castlebar); sisters, Celine (Dublin) and Eilish (Drogheda); and many nieces and nephews. The board members and staff of Comhlacht Forbartha Aitiuil Acla agus Turasoireacht Acla would like to convey their deepest sympathies to steve's extended network of family and friends. They will never forget his kindness. Requiem Mass will be celebrated for the repose of Steve Mulloy's soul in the St Patricks Church, Pollagh, on Tuesday evening, July 29, at 7:30 pm.
