Michael McHugh, or Mick as he was known, was loved by everyone who came in contact with him and the town of Claremorris was saddened by his passing. A native of Caherlistrane, Mick was a hugely popular figure in the south Mayo capital. He was 74 years old when he died. Mick was a student of St Jarlath's College in Tuam and a passionate footballer. He played with St Jarlath's and also with his college team in Callan, Co Kilkenny where he did his teacher training. Mick went on to join the staff St Colman's College in Claremorris, where he taught maths, Latin and Irish He continued his involvement with football and was one of the selectors on the Mayo minor team who was also heavily involved with football in St Colman's and was a selector on many of the winning Claremorris teams over the years. Mick retired from teaching some 10 years ago and spent the last number of years living in Thailand. Ironically, it was on Wednesday, when leaving cert students across the country gathered to collect their results, That news of Mick McHugh's death began to circulate. A larger than life figure, Mick was generous and fun-loving. He will be sadly missed. A large crowd of family and friends gathered to say a final farewell at Mick's funeral Mass in Claremorris on Sunday. He is survived by his wife Helen, sons Mervin and Bernard, daughters Rebecca, Gemma and Lorraine, and his sister Gemma. May he rest in peace.
