Mayo's Donal Vaughan gets out in front of Kerry's Johnny Buckley for possession

Mayo footballer Donal Vaughan has made his first championship appearance for Castlebar Mitchels.

Vaughan transferred from his native club Ballinrobe at the end of last year and his addition to the Mitchels squad further boosts their chances of retaining their county title.

The transfer caused quite a stir in the county as many vented their anger on social media over the fact that Vaughan left a club that had been just relegated to join a club 20 minutes down the road.

However, the county star has resided in Castlebar for the last three years where he runs a footwear store.

The Mayo SFC began last weekend and the defending champions easily saw off the challenge of Ballina Stephenites on a scoreline of 2-18 to 1-06.

Vaughan was introduced in the 40th minute of the game, but is sure to become a regular in the side as the year goes on.
