SFC: Early goal blitz helps Mairtins off to winning start

Stephen Campbell - Nh Mairtin

NH MAIRTIN 4-15

DUNDALK GAELS 2-15

An early goal blitz helped Nh Mairtin get their Senior Championship Group 3 campaign off to a winning start as they brushed aside the challenge of Dundalk Gaels at The Grove on Saturday evening.

The Dundalk men had come out on top against Cooley Kickhams in their first outing and were hoping to clinch a quarter final berth, however, they had no answer to the pace and power of the Mairtins who fully deserved their victory.

The Monasterboice men came flying out of the blocks and Conor Healy gave their side the perfect start with the opening goal of the game.

As the Gaels tried to settle into the game they suffered another body blow when Stephen Campbell fired in a second. When Padraig McDonagh added the third before the end of the first quarter, there was never going to be a way back for the Dundalk men as they trailed by 3-3 to 0-3.

The Gaels managed to stem the flow in the second quarter but were unable to make any real inroads on the scoreboard and they trailed by 3-7 to 0-8 at half time.

The Dundalk men were facing an uphill task at that stage and it got even more difficult when Campbell scored his second goal of the game to make it 4-8 to 0-10.

The Monasterboice side could afford to take their foot off the pedal in the final quarter and the Gaels responded by enjoying some good possession. Their reward came in the form of goals from Derek Crilly and Barry Watters but it was too little too late as the Mairtins claimed victory.

The Gaels will still make it through to the last eight if the Jocks defeat Cooley Kickhams in the final group game this weekend.
