JFC quarter-final round-up: Na Piarsaigh and Glyde qualify for last four

August 19, 2019

Na Piarsaigh and Glyde Rangers qualified for the semi-finals of the Louth Junior Championship after claiming victories in Friday night’s double-header at Clan na Gael Park.

The Tallanstown side enjoyed the more comfortable passage as they defeated Stabannon Parnells by 4-14 to 0-7, while Na Piarsaigh were made to battle all the way before scoring a 3-6 to 0-9 win over Nh Malachi.

The opening game of the night saw Glyde Rangers assert their authority in the early stages and a goal from Trevor O’Brien set them on their way. They continued to dominate and added further goals from Ciaran Sheridan and Barry Sharkey as they led by 3-9 to 0-3 at the break.

The result was beyond doubt at that stage but the second half saw Stabannon prove to be more competitive as Robbie Callaghan, Sean Halpenny and David Cluskey had a greater influence on proceedings, while Daniel Bannon and Aonghus Giggins were among the points.

However, Glyde were never in any danger and they completed the victory with a fourth goal from Martin McArdle.

The second game on the programme proved to be a much tighter affair but it was a hat-trick from David Boyle that ensured Na Piarsaigh progressed to the last four.

The opening half was closely contested with Nh Malachi finding their range in front of the posts. However, Na Piarsaigh showed them how it should be done in terms of taking goal chances as Boyle found the net from play and added a second from a penalty soon after as his side led by 2-1 to 0-5.

The teams enjoyed a good share of possession in the second half but again Na Piarsaigh were more clinical and had points from Robbie Murphy and Paul Mallon.

Boyle also raised a white flag before he added his third goal to ensure it was the Dundalk men who made it through to the semi-finals.
