Leinster club JFC semi-final: Young Irelands book place in decider

November 26, 2018

Celebration time for Dundalk Young Irelands.

YOUNG IRELANDS 0-13

TULLOGHER/ROSBERCON 0-6

Young Irelands booked their place in the Leinster Junior Championship Final after recording an impressive win over Kilkenny champions Tullogher/Rosbercon on Saturday afternoon.

The game in New Ross saw the Louth champions turn in an excellent team performance that had them in control for long periods as they booked a meeting with St Brigid’s of Offaly on Saturday, 8 December.

The Dundalk men were assisted by a rather harsh first half dismissal of a player from the home side but it is unlikely that that decision had too much of a bearing on the result as the Irelanders always looked to be the better side.

Despite the long trip, it was the Young Irelands who made a bright start to the game and after Cian O’Donoghue opened the scoring they continued to push forward and followed up with points from Dermot Mone and O’Donoghue again before Jordan O’Donoghue made it four.

The Kilkenny side finally got into the game and kicked the next three points but their hopes suffered a major setback when they were reduced to 14 men.

Just before the break Oisin McCabe settle his side when he fired over to give his side a 0-5 to 0-3 lead at half time.

The home side were still very much in contention at that stage but their hopes were soon to be dashed as a third quarter blitz from Young Irelands saw them take control of the game as scores from Dermot Mone (2), Cian O’Donoghue and Johnny Lynch stretched the lead to 0-9 to 0-3.

The Kilkenny men did battle back with three successive points but that was the end of their scoring as the Louth men completed the job with points from Lynch, Derek Maguire, Mone and Dean Maguire.
